Moto adds security chip to PowerQuicc

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — New versions of Motorola Inc.'s PowerQuicc I and II families support encryption and Internet Protocol Secure tunneling thanks to an integrated security core.

Both the MPC885 PowerQuicc I, based on the first-generation PowerPC, and the MPC8272 PowerQuicc II, based on a PowerPC 603e core, integrate the S1 security engine previously offered as an independent coprocessor. They are scheduled for launch this week.

Each line uses slightly different versions of the core, which is compatible with MPC184/185 security processor drivers. The PowerQuicc I core comes with a Data Encryption Standard execution unit (which also supports Triple-DES), an Advanced Encryption Standard execution unit and a message digest execution unit to support secure hashing. The core in PowerQuicc II includes all of those features plus a public-key execution unit to support RSA and Diffie-Hellman algorithms, as well as a true random-number generator.

The PowerQuicc I family's RISC core has a clock frequency range of 50 to 133 MHz, while the PowerQuicc II has a clock speed of 200 to 450 MHz. A total of eight new devices are being rolled out: MPC885, MPC880, MPC875 and MPC870 in the PowerQuicc I family; and MPC8272, MPC8271, MPC8248 and MPC8247 in the PowerQuicc II family.

The 875 and 885 PowerQuicc I devices offer the integrated security engine. The 870 line has dual Fast Ethernet ports, a single serial communication controller and a single serial management controller, without asynchronous transfer mode support. The 880 line preserves dual Fast Ethernet ports and offers three SCCs, dual SMCs and a full USB port.

The 870 PowerQuicc I line is offered in 256-lead PBGAs, while the 880 devices are in 357-lead PBGAs. All members of the PowerQuicc II line have 516-lead PBGA packages. In quantities of 10,000, the unit price for the MPC870 starts at $8.30 each for the 66-MHz version, $9.15 each for 120-MHz models.

Similar quantities of the MPC885 are priced at $17 for 66-MHz and $18.75 for 120-MHz speed grades. For the PowerQuicc II, the MPC8247 is priced at $18.89 each at 266 MHz, $25.61 at 400 MHz. The MPC8272 sells for $23.33 at 266 MHz, $31.64 at 400 MHz.
