MANHASSET, N.Y. — Sprint said Tuesday (July 22) it has awarded Lucent Technologies a $1 billion contract to enhance its CDMA2000 1xRTT-based PCS cellular network in the United States.

The deal is intended to shore up Sprint's nationwide coverage, performance and reliability.

Under the terms of the deal, Lucent will supply Sprint with its Flexent CDMA Modular Cell 4.0 as well as other advanced basestations, switching equipment and related software. The deal also includes provision of a roadmap leading to the deployment of CDMA200 1xEV-DV in the future.
