REDMOND, Wash. — Building on a partnership formed in 2000, AT&T Wireless Services Inc. and NTT Docomo Inc. on Thursday (Dec. 26) announced plans for the initial rollout of wideband CDMA (W-CDMA) technology in four U.S. markets by December 2004.

As part of a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, AT&T and NTT said they plan to launch communications cores in San Francisco, San Diego, Seattle and Dallas. By launching these cores, the companies are prepping the rollout of their first W-CDMA services in the U.S. sector.

AT&T is currently rolling out an EDGE network across the United States that is expected to be completed in 2003. That will be followed by the rollout of W-CDMA services in the four U.S. markets that will be "carefully timed and targeted, and enable us to make the most efficient use of our capital," said John Zeglis, AT&T Wireless' chairman and chief executive officer, in a statement.
