Designed for low-cost, embedded applications, Nitrox Lite is the entry-level player in the Nitrox line of security processors. The product performs packet forwarding and asymmetric or symmetric encryption at rates ranging from 100 Mbits/second to 1 Gbit/second. When it is used in higher-layer Internet Protocol Secure (IPsec) or Secure Sockets Layer processing, its performance ranges from 1,000 to 7,000 RSA (Rivest-Shamir-Adleman) operations/second.

The processor is available either as an individual chip, which is pin- and function-compatible with the higher-performance Nitrox line, or on Nitrox XL accelerator boards for either PCI or PCI-X. The chip supports DES, Triple-DES, AES, SHA-1 and MD-5 hashing and encryption algorithms, and for public-key processing it supports full RSA and Diffie-Hellman algorithms.

The three members of the Lite family-the CN1001, CN1005 and CN-1010-offer different peak processing rates. All are available in either 156-lead or 256-lead BGA packages. Prices in quantities of 1,000 range from $35 to $85 each. Accelerator boards sell for between $295 and $995 in OEM quantities. A special Nitrox Lite Evaluation Kit, with PCI evaluation board, middleware and drivers, is available for $3,995.
