MANHASSET, NY — The U.K.'s Tandberg Television has secured one of the largest ADSL broadband projects in the world to provide the Moscow region with advanced broadband entertainment services, including interactive TV, video on demand, multimedia games, high-speed Internet access and e-commerce.

Tandberg will provide decoding, encoding and streaming products to Sistema, Russia's largest private consumer services company and an active player in its telecommunications market.

Broadcast-quality TV and video services over ADSL will be available to Sistema's residential customers as soon as November, the company said.

Sistema's prime contractor is Alcatel, which will provide integration, customization and installation services as well as its Open Media Suite middleware software for delivering voice, data and video.

A key network design challenge will be decoding MPEG-2 video feeds and providing Gigabit Ethernet IP streams while maintaining picture quality and bandwidth efficiency.
