Changing Channels

By Rob Keenan

As you can tell, Communication Systems Design has seen some exciting changes over the past few months. We have grown as a publication. We have joined forces with the CMP family, which includes giants such as Embedded Systems Programming, EE Times, Electronics Buyer’s News, and Integrated Systems Design. And we have seen some exciting changes in the editorial staff.

Let me start off by introducing myself. I’m Robert Keenan, the new editor-in-chief of Communication Systems Design. I come to this publication after surfing the Internet wave as the managing editor of Wireless Design Online, a high-tech Web community targeting system-level designs. Prior to that, I wore a publishing hat when I served on the editorial staff of a wireless publication targeted at the OEM market.

In addition to a new editor-in-chief, the magazine has also seen the addition of John Poultney as the executive editor. John comes to Communication Systems Design from Mac Home Journal, where he served as editor. Prior to that, John worked as an editor in various aspects of the networking/engineering market.

These changes will allow Communication Systems Design to focus even more on you, the designer and developer of communication systems and equipment. We are here to provide you with the detailed technical articles written by engineers that help you solve your most pressing design problems. We will combine these well-known and respected technical articles with great columnists, an eye on emerging technologies, special supplements, buyer’s guides, product information, and much more.

This is an amazing time to be a member of the communication design market. The Internet continues to boom, doubling every 100 days, as Dataquest so often reports. Wireless technology continues to grow at remarkable rates. The fiber-optic market is hot. LANs, WANs, and other networking solutions are reaching more environments everyday. And, broadband technologies are still fighting it out to win the infamous last mile.

In the future, this column, along with all other articles and columns in Communication Systems Design, will be your source for technical information in the communication design market. Let us know what you think by writing articles, sending us an e-mail, or stopping by and saying hi at trade shows and conferences. Keep in touch by e-mailing me at rkeenan@cmp.com .

Saying Goodbye

On a sad note, this marks Mike Rodbell’s last issue as our “Standards and Protocols” columnist. For the last five years, Mike has provided our readers with insight into the emerging standards and protocols that have shaped and will continue to shape the communication market. Mike has been a valued asset to our staff, and we will miss him very much.

Communication Systems Design’s new editorial staff is excited about the opportunity to work within such an exciting community and to provide you with cutting-edge design information. Until next time!
