Chipset for Ethernet switches

Allayer Communications announced a chipset for the design of Gigabit Layer 3/4 Ethernet switches. The two devices in the chipset include the AL1022 2-port, Gigabit Ethernet switch chip and the AL3000 Layer 3/4 routing engine, which also provides network management. Each device contains a 12.8-Gbps, 32-bit RoX-II interface that allows an engineer to scale their design by linking multiple chips. The AL1022 supports features such as quality of service (QoS), trunking, and VLAN. It recognizes and prioritizes class 0 (management information), class 1 (voice and data), class 2 (data), and class 3 (back-up data) which are examples of high to low priority rating. The trunking feature in the AL1022 supports full IEEE 802.3ad. The network manager in the chip uses the RoX-II bus to collect network management information from up to 32 ports and provides spanning tree support. Product Xpress 105

Extended battery life processor

Transmeta Corp. introduced Crusoe, a family of smart microprocessors. The Crusoe processor’s low power will enable mobile PCs operating with Windows to operate on a single battery for up to a full work day. Crusoe-based Internet devices such as Web pads and mobile clients can use the Mobile Linux OS, which can be stored in solid-state Flash ROM, removing the need for a hard disk drive. Crusoe’s architecture consists of Transmeta’s Code Morphing software, which surrounds a VLIW silicon engine to deliver a PC-compatible processor. Using Transmeta’s LongRun power management technology, Crusoe continually adjusts its operating speed and voltage to match the needs of the application workload, extending the battery life. The model TM5400 operates at up to 700 MHz and is targeted at ultra-light mobile PCs running MS Windows 95, 98, and NT OSes. The TM3120, operating at up to 400 MHz, is designed for economical Web pads and mobile clients.

RTOS simulation environment

Green Hills Software announced ISIM, an RTOS simulation environment for their Integrity RTOS. ISIM is a PowerPC instruction set simulator that provides support for PowerPC systems running Integrity, including virtual memory facilities, exception handling, and debugging across a LAN. The system runs on Windows 95/98/NT and Solaris 2.x host platforms. ISIM simulates the RTOS using the same PowerPC code that runs on the target, which enables designers to determine precise application size characteristics during simulation. The software is tightly integrated with the MULTI debugger, allowing designers to debug their simulated application on the host the same way that they would debug it on the target. ISIM supports both freeze-mode and run-mode debugging, and can simulate Integrity-based PowerPC applications on a Windows or Unix-based host system at a speed of nearly two MIPS on a 550-MHz Pentium III.
