Network switch processors
Galileo Technology announced the GalNet-3 architecture family of converged voice/data network switch
processors.
The first products in the family support switching of voice and data traffic over Fast Ethernet, Gigabit
Ethernet, and packet over SONET (POS). The GalNet-3 operates on the concept of availability of service (AoS),
which works by reserving bandwidth within the switch for specific flows of data. For example, a voice over IP
(VoIP) session can be considered a flow for which GalNet-3 would reserve bandwidth within the switch.
GalNet-3 can make bandwidth reservation decisions on a packet-by-packet basis by
reassigning bandwidth as
needed. Up to 128,000 different flows can be tracked simultaneously with either strict or flexible limits set for
flow policing. Systems based on GalNet-3 will have full wire-speed Layer 2/3/4/5 switching with a maximum port
density of 256 10/100 Ethernet ports and up to thirty-two Gigabit Ethernet or POS/SDH ports, and support for
64,000 IP/IPX routes.

Line interface unit
Dallas Semiconductor announced the DS2148 line interface unit (LIU), which supports E1, T1, or J1 circuits at 3.3-V, 5-V, and industrial temperature ranges. The DS2148 requires a single crystalless 2.048-MHz clock for all three interfaces, using an internal digital PLL to convert the 2.048-MHz clock to the 1.544 MHz that is used in
T1 and J1 applications. E1 requires either a 120- balanced or 75- unbalanced termination, while T1 and J1 require a 100- balanced termination on the receive side. The DS2148 comes in two standard packages for the single version, 44-TQFP, and a 44-CABGA. The CABGA will be used to create a multichip module yielding four independent channels in a single 17 x 17-mm BGA footprint.

Bluetooth RF transceiver
Temic Semiconductors announced a short-range RF transceiver for the radio portion of Bluetooth systems. The T2901 complies with the Bluetooth radio standard of 0-dBm output power at the antenna, spectrum spreading
with 1,600 frequency hops per second among seventy-nine frequencies in the 2.402- and 2.480-GHz range, and a gross data rate of 1 Mbps. The device has a ramp-signal generator for a smooth increase of the output power and an on-chip auxiliary voltage regulator. A proprietary on-chip image-rejection mixer offers up to 35-dB image rejection. The sensitivity exceeds the Bluetooth requirements by 10 dB, achieving a sensitivity of -80 dBm. The T2901 also contains an MCC for modulating the VCO. The MCC enables a
