Communication Processors: A Buyer's Guide

We've classified products in this listing into three broad categories: network processors , communication processors , and content-addressable memory (CAM) .

Network processors are typically used in high speed routers, to accelerate the classifying, processing and forwarding of packets.

Although we're applying the term communication processors to the overall product category, we're also using it in this product listing to apply to a sub-category which could be called "communication processors other than network processors." While network processors focus on high speed packet processing in network switches and routers, communication processors are used in other devices that still involve some type of communications. Communication processors typically combine three things: a microprocessor, one or more communication ports (such as serial ports), and some type of protocol processing capability (such as HDLC, for example). By integrating these three things into one chip, communication processors save designers the hassle of having to design these systems themselves, as well as potential cost savings compared to less-integrated solutions.

Content-addressable memories (CAMs) accelerate lookup tables in routers. Some might argue that CAMs are memory devices, and not processors. However, we've included them in this buyer's guide because they are often employed by designers to speed the lookup process (which is key in classifying packets), and thereby indirectly boosting packet forwarding rates.

Unlike conventional memory devices -- which are purely storage devices -- CAMs actually have some built-in processing capability. When data tables are stored in conventional memory, an external processor (following a programmed search algorithm) must sequentially access each memory location in turn, looking for a match between the data contained in the memory location and the sought-after data pattern. (There are higher-performance search algorithms than a simple sequential search, but it still remains for the host processor (not the memory) to do the searching. With a CAM, it's the memory device itself that performs the search and delivers the results.

Information for this product listing is provided by the respective suppliers. It is deemed accurate, but cannot be guaranteed. Except where noted, pricing is for 10,000-piece quantities.

Product description: The Classification CAM is the first mixed-mode, ternary/binary search engine for Layer 2, Layer 3, and Layer 4. This CAM has a Bank structure for the selection of binary or ternary mode and table size (36, 136, and 272 bits). Binary mode offers twice the density of ternary. This CAM supports the shifting functions needed for alleviating bottlenecks in classification searches. Search speed is 15 ns.
Price: $40 to $45.

Product name: Longest Match Engine
Product description: The Longest Match Engine (LME) is the key component for classless interdomain routing (CIDR) and is used for collecting associative data for the longest match when there are multiple matching entries. Throughput is 4.17 million packets per second (Mpps) for the 8k LME and 6.7 Mpps for the 64k LME. Data insertion and deletion rate are 500 entries/s and 1k entries/s, respectively. Table size is 8k x 32 for the 8K LME and 64k x 40 for the 64k LME. The device is also available as an ASIC core.
Price (10k quantities): $40.00 for the 8k version and $60 for the 64k version.

Product name: LTI7010 SuperCAM Content Addressable Memory
Product description: The LTI7010 SuperCAM is a ternary CAM that supports 34-, 68-, 136-, and 272-bit wide search operations. With a sustained throughput of 83 million searches/sec, the device provides enabling solutions for large ISPs, and for Internet backbones where bandwidth requirements for OC-48 and OC-192 are easily met.

The LTI7010 SuperCAM is fully ternary (there is a mask bit for every data bit). Also it is user-configured to handle 34-, 68-, 136-, and 272-bit operations. For example, it can be configured to be 8k x136, 4k x 272, 16k x 68, or a 32k x 34 device. With multiple requirements in the filtering and packet-forwarding process, the LTI7010 has four quadrants, and each quadrant can have its own programmable width. The SuperCAM search engine can handle IPv4 operations (such as 32-bit look-ups and filtering and classification on words wider than 128 bits) and allows multiple applications to co-exist in the same device. Combining Layer 2 and Layer 3 applications in the same device shortens the development time. The LTI7010 SuperCAM is available in 66 and 83-MHz speed grades.
Price (10k quantities): Starts at less than $40.00.

Product name: MU9C3480/MU9C5480
Product description: The MU9C3480 (256 word depth) and MU9C5480 (512-word depth) are members of the LANCAM family with the same 64-bit word width, 16-bit I/O width and instruction set as all LANCAM devices. The devices can process packets at Layer 2 (eight 10/100 Mbps Ethernet ports at wirespeed), Layer 3 (2.7M IPv4 CIDR look-ups per second), and at Layer 4 and above. The MU9C3480 and MU9C5480 come in 44-pin PLCC packages, are available in 3.3- and 5-V versions, and are available for both commercial and industrial temperature ranges. Verilog and VHDL models are available.
Price (10k quantities): MU9C3480 — $6.00, MU9C5480 — $9.00.

Product name: CIDR Processor-TM, NL77542-40/50/66
Product description: The CIDR Processor-TM, NL77542-40/50/66, performs longest prefix match searches on IPv4 address tables. The device is organized as 32k entries, each with a 32-bit wide IPv4 entry field and an associated 8-bit wide port attribute field. A match flag and highest priority longest prefix match index is returned after a compare instruction. Table updates at clock speed eliminate the need to resort entries or maintain dual tables. The device is depth cascadable without glue logic. Modules are also available.
Price (10k quantities): The NL77542-40/50/66 device is priced at $42 (40 MHz), $47.25 (50 MHz), and $55 (66 MHz). The NLM79542-33/50 (128k x 40) 168-pin DIMM module is priced at $168 (33 MHz) and $220 (50 MHz).

Product name: IPCAM-2, NL85721-50/66
Product description: The IPCAM-2, NL85721-50/66 is an 8k x 128 ternary CAM performing parallel and deterministic search operations on memory tables designed for Internet packet classification applications such as Gigabit Ethernet routers and ATM switches.
